Pfizer, Maker of Depo Provera Failed to Warn Women About the Risks
MANUFACTURERS KNEW THE DANGER
As early as 1995, drug manufacturer, Pfizer was aware of research suggesting a link to increased rates of meningiomas in women using Depo Provera. The company did not adequately warn doctors or patients of the potential risk associated with using this popular birth control. It wasn’t until the March study was published that Pfizer stated, “We are aware of this potential risk associated with long-term use of progestogens and, in collaboration with regulatory agencies, are in the process of updating product labels and patient information leaflets with appropriate wording.”
The FDA already advises that the drug be used for a maximum of 2 years after research suggested a link to loss of bone density associated with long term use, but no warnings were made about the link to intercranial or spinal tumors.
