Virginia’s legislature passed new regulations for car insurance requirements in March of 2021. The new requirements increased minimum liability coverage for drivers in Virginia over a period of 3 years beginning in January 2022, with an increase to a $30,000 policy. January 1st. 2025, the final increase went into effect, requiring licensed drivers to carry a minimum of $50,000 of liability coverage on their vehicle.
This change came in an attempt to address the rising costs of car accidents on residents. The rising costs are attributed to several factors, including increased medical expenses, higher vehicle repair costs due to advanced technologies, and a greater number of accidents. Lawmakers believe the additional insurance coverage will help provide financial protection for individuals involved in car accidents.

In addition to the increase in coverage required, Virginia also removed the option for uninsured motorists to register vehicles by paying a fee to the DMV. Effective July 1, 2024, all drivers are required to carry minimum liability coverage. Penalties for driving without the proper insurance are a $600 fine, the suspension of driver’s license, registration, and license plates until all fees are paid and proof of insurance and financial responsibility is furnished to the DMV. NEW RULES FOR DRIVERS

These changes are all designed to help accident victims get the money they need if they have been injured. Even though these laws have been enacted, it does not mean insurance companies are going to be quick to pay out on these new limits. Several are even trying to get insurers to opt out of being able to use coverage they pay for. If you have been in an accident, it’s important to speak with a car accident lawyer that is skilled in protecting the rights of accident victims. The insurance companies have lawyers on their side, shouldn’t you?
One of the most important jobs an experienced car accident lawyer has is making sure after a serious accident, they find all the available insurance coverage to pay for your losses. Besides basic liability coverage from the other driver, your own policy or that of a resident relative may be used to help get you the money you need to get back on your feet. If you have been injured and need help navigating the insurance web, call our team today. They may be able to unlock coverage you don’t know you have.
