More property damage and lives are lost in house fires on Thanksgiving Day than any other day of the year. The major culprit is cooking-related mishaps. Reports show roughly 2,000 Thanksgiving Day fires in residential buildings are reported to U.S. fire departments each year and cause an estimated average of 5 deaths, 25 injuries, and $121 million in property loss.
How can you prevent fires and related injuries during Thanksgiving?
– A major offense is improperly frying turkey. Turkey fryers can cause burns and destruction of property. Exercise extreme caution and follow manufacturer instructions. Place turkey fryers outside and away from the residence, deck, overhang, and garage.
– Do not wear loose-fitting clothing or dangling jewelry.
– Never leave a fryer, grill, or stove unattended while cooking.
– Make sure to keep flammable objects, such as oven mitts, utensils, food packages, and towels, away from heat sources.
– Keep a pan lid or baking sheet nearby, use if a pan catches on fire. Have a fire extinguisher available not more than 10 feet from the stove.
– Do not allow children or pets to play near a cooking area. Allow at least three feet of space.
We wish you Happy and Safe Thanksgiving!
