WATCH OUT FOR UNEXPECTED CAR INSURANCE RATE HIKES
Would you be surprised to learn that your insurance is spying on you? When an attorney in New York noticed an increase in his car insurance he learned that his vehicle data was to blame. The onboard computer in his car was sending data to his car insurance policy about his driving habits that pushed him into a different risk category and a higher rate!
The partnerships between car manufacturers and data brokers is nearly invisible to drivers. These companies obtain consent in fine print and privacy policies that few read. In fact, most new vehicles require consent to utilize the in-car entertainment system.
In this video Brother Rutter talks about the recent discovery about how onboard vehicle computers are telling your car insurance more about you than you might realize. Are we surprised? Absolutely not! We’ve seen car insurance companies do their best to avoid paying out on claims against the coverage we all pay dearly for.
Recently, The New York Times published an article outlining a consumer’s surprise when the cost of his car insurance jumped by 21 percent in 2022. An insurance agent told him his LexisNexis report was a factor.
He requested his “consumer disclosure report,”from, LexisNexis. He received a 258-page report listing each time he and his wife had driven their vehicle, explicitly detailing their driving performance for every trip. This document outlined start and end times, driving distance, and any speeding, hard braking or sharp accelerations that occurred. The only thing it didn’t include were the destinations.
How can this happen? In most instances, the driver is unaware of their enrollment.
Modern cars are internet-enabled and by using services like navigation or roadside assistance. In recent years, large automakers, have started offering optional features in connected-car apps that rate people’s driving. Some drivers may not realize that, if they turn on these features, the car companies then give information about how they drive to data brokers like LexisNexis.
The Wall Street Journal also published an alarming finding recently. Insurance companies are also spying on you in your own backyard- literally.
The article describes how insurance companies are using aerial images to drop properties depicted as higher risk, spotlighting a woman who was dropped by her home insurer due to aerial photos of her roof.
Unbeknownst to homeowners, just about every building in the United States is being photographed. Companies hire airplanes, high-altitude balloons or drones to take photos of clients’ homes.
Insurance companies claim consumers agree to this spying when they purchase a policy. industry insiders and consumer advocates warn that these images are not constantly updated or accurately interpreted by insurers before coverage is dropped. They also are worried by the limited rights customers have to privacy and the ability to challenge the images.
